Making the work public

"Each Student will find ways to "drift" through the surrounding area of UNCG in search of aesthetic visual experiences often overlooked. To do this, students must take a closer look at the place we live and see things at a "micro-level"- highlighting the beautiful, corky and unique nuances of our city."

The final part of this often overlooked project is to allow people to take the journey or take notice of my "findings" - Therefore I have to make them public. I'm doing so by making this blog and posting flyers around the campus area about the blog, so people will hopefully come check out the blog and visit my findings.
So we have to have chosen a final 5 locations .
.. but I couldn't just post 5 and keep folks from missing out on all the great overlooked things I've found around campus. All of the directions to these locations are from the Maud F. Gatewood Studio Arts Building on UNCG campus off Highland St.

Here are my "often overlooked" findings.

1.) Joyner St. – Directions : Walk out the Art building, turn right and walk down to Spring Garden St, take a right on Spring Garden St. , go through the light that intersects spring garden and Tate St. and turn right on the first street after the light which is Joyner St. The house is on your left if you walk up about half a block.
- It is a cute little house with this beautiful tree out front flowering with pink and decorated with mugs, peace signs, a clock and birdhouses. It’s a total work of art in itself.
- I personally find this worth the trip because its so pleasant to view. It’s a beautiful flowering tree covered with peace signs and interesting things. It’s a unique thing to come across.

2.) Carr St.Directions: Walk out the Art building, turn right on highland st and walk down to Spring Garden St, take a right on spring garden st. walk to tate st and make a left on to Tate St from Spring Garden St at the light. Walk down about 2 or 3 blocks and make a right onto Carr st – it’s the second light on Tate St towards West Market. Go down not even half a block and you will see the beautiful

- This pretty cool find, I almost passed by. It’s a cute green house with this beautiful purple flowering wisteria growing up the side of the front porch to the side of the roof. 2a – it’s a power line that crosses over the street and has beautiful wisteria growning across it and all over .

- It really caught my eye because of the way that it is growing. I think its worth making the voyage because of the pure beauty of it. It is growing in a kind of obscure way and I was thinking about how cool it would be if it grew all around the entire house or covering the power line and down the pole, How beautiful it would be.

3.) Corner of McGee St and Mendenhall StDirections: Walk out the Art building, turn right on to Highland St. and walk down to Spring Garden St, take a right on Spring Garden St. Walk down to Tate St. and make a left on to Tate St. from Spring Garden St. Walk down a block and turn right on to Walker Ave. Go up past the parking deck and walk up the ramp to the top of the deck – that is a gravel back road to McGee st. Keep walking straight til you hit actual black top – it will be on your right. Walk down McGee St. til right before the corner and look at the brick building on your right.
- It’s a brick four plex apartment building on the corner. At 5:45ish pm last week is when I took the photo and the shadow pattern on the back of the building is what we are looking at. The sun is shining through the trees behind the parking lot behind the building and creating a really wonderful pattern.
- It really caught my eye – it was a warm, breezy day and I was walking around and saw this and it was just really interesting to see. The pattern was so big and so bright.

4.) The gravel road off McGee St. – Directions: Walk out the Art building, turn right on to Highland St. and walk down to Spring Garden St, take a right on Spring Garden St. Walk down to Tate St. and make a left on to Tate St. from Spring Garden St. Walk down a block and turn right on to Walker Ave. Go up past the parking deck and walk up the ramp to the top of the deck – that is a gravel back road to McGee st. Don’t walk all the way to McGee st. Right before McGee St – there will be a white shed on your left and that is where it is.
-- It a is a pretty neat spray painted stencil that says “ All new super exclusive ALGORE! Bongwater club mixtape volume 1” and to the left of it on the white shed is some kind of graffiti looking word in red marker. It was pretty funny when I read it – so I snapped a photo. I had never noticed it before and I’ve walked by that shed many times. I think it’s a pretty random thing to be stenciled and not just spray-painted.

5.) Corner of Carr St. and Mendenhall St. – Directions: Walk out the Art building, turn right on to Highland St. and walk down to Spring Garden St, take a right on Spring Garden St. Walk down to Tate St. and make a left on to Tate St. from Spring Garden St. Walk down about 3 or 4 blocks, you’ll go through the Walker St. and you’ll turn right on to Carr St. Walk all the way down to the corner of Mendenhall St and Carr St. and turn around toward Tate st and You will be in front of the house with the white picket fence.
- It is a white picket fence around a nice house and what I noticed about this white picket fence, besides all the pretty flowers inside of it and growing out of the spaces in the fence. I was turning to go right on to Mendenhall St and saw all these beautiful purple flowers just growing through the cracks in the white picket fence and it just really caught my eye. I love they way they are so round and full outside of the cracks in the fence and how you can see the yellow flowers on the inside of the fence through the cracks.

6.) Tate St. – Directions: Walk out the Art building, turn right on to Highland St. and walk down to Spring Garden St, take a right on Spring Garden St. Walk down to Tate St. and make a left on to Tate St. from Spring Garden St. Walk down Tate st. and pass Carr St and the grass ofthe house is on the right side of the street before you get to Rankin Place. Its a little white house on the right side of the street with very perfectly, green grass.
- It’s a cute little white house with the most perfectly straight, green grass I’ve ever seen. It was quite intriguing; I was almost shocked at the perfect ness of it. I tried to show the grass as best as I could in the photograph. The way the light was hitting the house in the evening that day and the grass at the time was beautiful and really contrasty. I tried to show the sharpness and straightness of the green, green grass because I’m sure not too many people really stand there and look at this yard off Tate St.

7.) Driveway off Rankin Place. – Directions: Walk out the Art building, turn right on to Highland St. and walk down to Spring Garden St, take a right on Spring Garden St. Walk down to Tate St. and make a left on to Tate St. from Spring Garden St. Walk down about 3 or 4 blocks, you’ll go through the Walker St. and Carr St. light, it will be your next big street and you will make a right on to Rankin place. Walk down Rankin place on the right side of the street and before you get to Mendenhall you will see a brick building with really cool stucco porches on the front, its the driveway of this building.

- This driveway, I walked by it and backed up. I think the crack down the driveway is very cool. I stood and looked at it through my camera for a minute and then took a few shots. The crack looks like the earth cracks open during an earthquake. Its like the grass is trying so hard to overpower that concrete and it seems to be a very long battle. I just really love the line and the way the grass is creeping up and cracking up the concrete driveway.

8.) Corner of Rankin Place and Mendenhall St.Directions: Walk out the Art building, turn right on to Highland St. and walk down to Spring Garden St, take a right on Spring Garden St. Walk down to Tate St. and make a left on to Tate St. from Spring Garden St. Walk down about 3 or 4 blocks, you’ll go through the Walker St. and Carr St. light, it will be your next big street and you will make a right on to Rankin place. Go all the way down to the right before the corner on your right of Mendenhall and Rakin. Its right next to a pole on the sidewalk.
-- I was on walking down the sidewalk actually taking a photo of something else near almost directly next to this sidewalk gem. I looked down and saw “I HATE CHEESE” drawn into the concrete sidewalk. Its probably one of the greatest and most random things I’ve ever seen in the concrete. It made me laugh and the fact the I’ve never seen it – made it even more awesome. I am not sure how often this is actually over looked but I’m sure its not viewed as much as I think it should be.
